NKOTB

One morning last week while running at the gym and watching the Today Show I saw a preview for the New Kids On The Block concert. I was under the impression it was a onetime reunion concert but then later found out from a friend they were making a comeback and had made a new CD. So of course I had to check it out, so I set it to tape and planned on watching it while Nick was on a campout with the scouts. So Friday night I settled in to watch the concert not knowing if I'd scream like a school girl or want to vomit at the sight the 35 year old men trying to stage a comeback. Well. . . I now know that I still know the lyrics to every song even though I haven't heard them for 15+ years. It brought back so many memories of hours spent out in the garage learning every NKOTB dance move with my siblings. Suzi and I would buy teen magazines with our babysitting money just to tear out their pictures and pin them up like wallpaper in our bedroom. All six of us kids made a music video at Universal Studios to "Hanging Tough" and we had a one night showing of "Cover Girl" at a family reunion. I could go on and on but we were all fans and we all had our favorites, Tim/Donny, Suzi/Jordan, Me/Jonathon, Jeff/Danny, Steve/Joey (yeah I still know all of their names and if I thought long enough I could probably tell you their favorite colors and foods too). I can't imagine what our parents thought but I'm sure we gave them a few laughs. I know this because I'm now a parent and after the boys go to bed we laugh too. I don't know how successful the NTOKB comeback will be but I can say, thanks for the memories, the Doll kids have got some good ones.

Sunny Day

We have seen the sun and it has renewed my faith that summer will indeed come! Last weekend we had some beautiful weather and we took advantage of every minute of it. We ate lunch and dinner in the backyard for two days, played in the sprinklers with friends, did some yard work and tried to soak up as much of the sun as possible. Here are a few pictures of the boys (the nice weather was a good excuse to try out the new camera).

Spencer could eat a whole watermelon himself if we let him try.

I'd rather not know

Do you ever catch your kids doing something disgusting and you almost wish you hadn't seen it? You know they're kids and thus their common sense is still maturing, but you'd rather not know about it. Take this morning for example, I walk into the bathroom and find Spencer hovering over the potty up to his elbows in toilet water vigorously splashing it onto his cheeks. When confronted and an explanation demanded his enthusiastic reply was "I taking care of my body!" I then clarified that washing hands and face only counts as "taking care of your body" when it is with sink water, not potty water. Do I really have to explain this???? I then recommitted myself to cleaning the toilet more often. Some days oblivion is not a bad place to be.

Parents on the loose

A sign of a true mother. . . is one who points out the trains and tractors as she and her husband are driving on their weekend alone, forgetting there is no little boys around who actually care. Yes it's true it's hard to turn off the mommy mode but I do enjoy trying. This year for Mother's Day Nick and I snuck off alone to Anacortes, WA to the Majestic Inn and Spa for a whole 2 days! It's good to be reminded that before we were The Oliver Family we were just Nick and Kati and we enjoyed just being together and talking. Most days our conversations are limited to 30 seconds over dinner because the boys want to tell Dad all about their day. Any time they see us hugging or kissing they start in with chainsaw noises and come and "cut" us apart. So needless to say 48 uninterrupted hours were just lovely.

So what were the boys up to while we were gone? Well they were treated to a weekend at Grandma and Grandpa Oliver's house. The boys actually didn't know Nick and I were out of town, they just thought it was a kid only weekend that we weren't invited to. From the reports we got they had a fun filled 48 hours that included building a chicken coup, having a campfire, going on a hike, playing army men and with the new kittens, sleeping in a tent with grandpa in the backyard and watching Star Wars for the very first time. The boys are so lucky to have two sets of fun grandparents who are very much aware of the boy’s personalities and interests and create such happy memories when they are together. Thanks Julie and Steve for taking such good care of the boys this weekend. And Nick thanks for understanding that even though I love our family I need time away and for the new camera!

And so now we are back to real life. . .Nick came home with a nasty sinus infection and Carson has a bacterial infection (pinkeye) in one of his eyes. Good thing I didn't completely turn off that mommy mode.

We've taken a few weeks off from the blogging world and I broke our camera but we just wanted everyone to know we are still here, happy, healthy and doing great. Carson is in his last month of preschool and is excited for our visit to CA to see grandparents and cousins, start baseball, swim lessons and for Kindergarten! He and I went on a date last weekend together to see an Aladdin play . He was such a sweetheart and held my hand as we walked and was super into our one on one converstation over cheese fries and milk shakes. I wanted to freeze that moment in time so I can replay it when he's a teenager. Can't they just stay 4 forever??? Spencer has begun to talk a mile a minute and humors us all at dinner with the same 3 knock knock jokes. I'm hoping he can channel some of that energy into potty training over the next few months. Throughout the day he goes between pretending he's a kitty and a pirate and when he can't decide he just meows while he plunders. As for Nick and I we are in discussions for half marathon training this summer and lots of time spent on our beautiful green grass (all the rain is good for something). If I had a camera I'd show you what a wonderful job our resident landscaper Nick has done ridding the lawn of moss and dandelions. I've begun wearing my flip flops just willing summer to come, it hasn't worked yet.
